Out of Town Ima on "Heard Camp Sternberg Is Closing"

We heard Camp Sternberg is closing. I know that rumor goes around every year, but a call to the Camp office verified that it is a distinct possibility. Applications are not being been sent out from the camp office and staff there are not sure what will be with the camp (new owner bought the camp last year). We have been a Sternberg family for 8 years (2 girls, one still of camp age) and I was a counselor there. We would hate to see this wonderful camp close.

Is there any thing that can be done to prevent this? Anyone have a good idea? If you are a Sternberg family, call the camp office. Perhaps if we bombard the office with calls the new owner will re-consider and open it up.

Hi. I'm in charge of coordinating a color war in a school I work in, and I'm wondering if anyone has a cute theme that wouldn't be too hard for elementary school students (ages 11-14)to work with. Originality would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I recently saw ad for an evening camp for girls called Zapped (or is it Zapt?). Does anyone know anything about this camp or those who run it? The concept seems like a great idea, but who is behind it? I did not save the ad from when I first saw it, and have not seen anything in the last week or 2. Anyone have any more info?

Hi all-I have a question about girls sleepaway camp. I myself went to Bnos like a hundred years ago, now my 8th grader wants to go and I dont know where to send her. We are a MO family, they go to a co-ed school in the community. I was educated in the finest girls yeshiva, however my husband is not from NY, and he wanted the kids to be with "community people", hence the reason for thier school. We are nice, religious people, with TV and internet,of sephardic descent. I cover my hair and we are regular, normal people! Im getting very descriptive because when you hear they go to a co-ed yeshiva, you may think us a certain type.
Anyway, with all that info, I wanted to know about camps. Ive been out of the camp circle since I was a teenager and from what i hear, camps are different these day-as in girls have to wear nude stockings-all day, every day,not just on shabbat?! Anyway, can you reccomend a nice camp for a nice girl? I would like to hear what everyone thinks about Raninu,Sternberg, and Girlzone in particular, as these are what I am seriously considering.
Thanks all for your help!

Just out of curiosity, what is the usual salary for a counselor/JC in your area? Are they tipped? Is it age-based?

writersoul on "Ten Things Your Child's Counselor Wishes You Knew"

I'm having in mind that column they have in Family First about 'Top 10 Things Your ______ Wishes You Knew'. I'd like to start one with little tidbits about camp and stuff counselors wish parents knew. I'd like other teens and adults who are counselors to add on. I'm a preschool counselor so mine will be from that angle, so if you work in another age group it would be helpful to include stuff for that age. Perhaps the parents on here will take heed...
I'll start: (By the way, these are ALL real grievances I or my friends have had)
If your child is autistic, please TELL THE COUNSELOR (yes, this really happened to me).
If you can't tip, I understand. Please just don't ignore me. Mention briefly that money is tight or something, and write a cute note about how you appreciated what we did the whole summer. Otherwise I'll think you just weren't happy with how I did. (One of the best tips a friend of mine got, from a family who was experiencing financial difficulties, was a bag of homemade cookies.)
Even if you do tip, I love to get notes. Trust me, I will keep the note long after the tip money is spent.
DON'T POP IN!!! Please! Your child will be FINE. He just got used to being in an unfamiliar environment away from Mommy. We've got your number if anything goes wrong. If he sees you, I'm the one who's going to suffer. (Especially prevalent in bungalow colonies.)
We are not responsible (and in fact are not allowed to) dispense medicine. If your child is sick, he or she should not go to camp. Period.
If you don't want your kids eating sugar, then YOU provide an alternative. Otherwise your child WILL receive the standard lollies.
Please continue this, guys!
Parent feedback is also appreciated.

On behalf of the klal:

Summer is around the corner and already the heat kicked in, with the sticky weather, I would like to ask a request from every person;male and female, there is something called PROPER HYGIENE.

When everyone is having a great time playing in the sun and enjoying the warm weather, people tend to forget they sweat more and for kavod habrios, its not bekavodik to walk around smelling up the streets.

So please, again, on behalf of the klal, please take extra care of yourself when you enjoy the summer heat!
Some tips:
* shower atleast once a day.
* deoderant is very essential atleast twice a day.
* brush teeth more regularly.

Looking forward to a refreshing summer.
