writersoul on "Ten Things Your Child's Counselor Wishes You Knew"
I'm having in mind that column they have in Family First about 'Top 10 Things Your ______ Wishes You Knew'. I'd like to start one with little tidbits about camp and stuff counselors wish parents knew. I'd like other teens and adults who are counselors to add on. I'm a preschool counselor so mine will be from that angle, so if you work in another age group it would be helpful to include stuff for that age. Perhaps the parents on here will take heed...
I'll start: (By the way, these are ALL real grievances I or my friends have had)
If your child is autistic, please TELL THE COUNSELOR (yes, this really happened to me).
If you can't tip, I understand. Please just don't ignore me. Mention briefly that money is tight or something, and write a cute note about how you appreciated what we did the whole summer. Otherwise I'll think you just weren't happy with how I did. (One of the best tips a friend of mine got, from a family who was experiencing financial difficulties, was a bag of homemade cookies.)
Even if you do tip, I love to get notes. Trust me, I will keep the note long after the tip money is spent.
DON'T POP IN!!! Please! Your child will be FINE. He just got used to being in an unfamiliar environment away from Mommy. We've got your number if anything goes wrong. If he sees you, I'm the one who's going to suffer. (Especially prevalent in bungalow colonies.)
We are not responsible (and in fact are not allowed to) dispense medicine. If your child is sick, he or she should not go to camp. Period.
If you don't want your kids eating sugar, then YOU provide an alternative. Otherwise your child WILL receive the standard lollies.
Please continue this, guys!
Parent feedback is also appreciated.

On the YW Home Page there is this story:
Camp Govoah Bus Crash Sends Eight To Hospital With Minor Injuries
(Wednesday, July 25th, 2012)A bus carrying 13 passengers crashed Monday, sending eight to an area hospital.
At approximately 4:34 p.m. Monday, the bus, which was traveling from Camp Govoah in Durham, was on county Route 22 in the town when it had lost power causing it to roll backwards, according to a statement made to state police by the 20-year-old driver.
“The vehicle continued backwards for approximately one-tenth of a mile,” State Police Troop F
Commander Major Edward Raso said, “and traveled off the south shoulder, striking and severing a utility pole.”
Eight of the passengers were transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital with minor injuries as a
precautionary measure, police officials said.
The accident is still under investigation.
Fraidy Karmel, the wife of Camp Govoah’s Head Counselor Rabbi Leibel Karmel, said the camp was
“Everyone is fine, thank god,” Karmel said, “and we are just so grateful that all of the children are fine and no one had to stay in the hospital.”grateful for the speed and efficiency of the first responders.
Hope everyone is okay! Any updates?

Yeshiva Bachur Dehydrates during Bein Hazmanim Trip
(Wednesday, August 1st, 2012)
A Jerusalem yeshiva bachur dehydrated during a hike in Nachal Amud in northern Israel on Tuesday.
Ichud Hatzalah received the call during the afternoon hours explaining the victim “was not feeling well” after walking for about an hour. The EMTs found the young man, who apparently dehydrated, and they carried him about an hour to the waiting ambulance that transported him to a local hospital in stable condition.
EMS officials stress that persons heading out for summer hikes must be equipped with ample quantities of water and hikers must drink regularly, even if they are not thirsty. In addition, one should wear appropriate clothing, apply sun screen and wear a hat to protect from the harsh midday Mideast sun.

Camp Mishkon is a wonderfully unique camp, designed to provide children and adults with severe special needs an unforgettable summer experience, as well as provide some much needed respite for the families of these wonderful individuals. Unfortunately, Camp Mishkon is closing. Some of the staff are working tirelessly to open a new camp that will provide the same benefits to these special children (and their families). yidy1020 on "Overprotective Parents in the Brooklyn Jewish Community"
To all parents in the Brooklyn community,
I hope this letter finds you well and you are having a wonderful summer. I would like to bring to your attention something which is very disturbing in my eyes, and that is limited interaction between kids and their counselors.
I have a hard time understanding why great and dedicated counselors are not allowed to arrange special activities with their campers, whether it’s after camp hours during the summer or during the year, for example, having get- togethers, playing sports, and something similar. If I were a parent of a child who had such a great counselor that will go out of his way to do things for the bunk, I would say “Great, you are a great dedicat ed guy. Do it”. As a youth director during the year, if a leader of mine wanted to do something with his group during the week (depending on the age, I would not do this for a very young grade) I would say go ahead!!!! I feel that parents who are overprotective with their children are doing a major injustice for kids.
I would therefore ask these kinds of parents to start thinking a bit, and maybe ask themselves the following question: “Is my counselor/leader dedicated”? Maybe I can trust him/her in certain things out of camp/ youth program!!!” Counselors and leaders are there for the kids and their job is to give kids a great time, but it does not have to end there. I know kids who have stayed in touch with me on many occasions, whether it’s a monthly phone call, going to their Bar Mitzvah’s etc. It’s an important lifeline that you, the parent may be taking that away from that child. I know my mother A”H was also an overprotective mother, only because I was a n only child, and I never went to sleep away camp as a kid because of that. My goal is to take this initiative and break this overprotectiveness from these kind of parents, so living normal life can be restored. I hope you join this initiative with me. Feel free to write back in the papers what you feel about overprotectiveness. Thank You.

Wisey on "Being a Counselor"
I went to camp thinking that the job of a counselor was mostly fun: cheering on sports teams, encouraging color war excitement etc. but I found out that the work involved was much more than I expected.
Waking up kids and getting them to go to shacharis
Keeping them quiet during davening
Getting them to do bunk clean-up (especially the ones that have maids at home and are aghast at the idea of doing work)
Getting them to go to breakfast instead of eating the junk food their parents gave them.
Keeping them inside the dining room until bentching
Convincing a kid to take his meds
Getting kids to go to activities instead of playing DS or whatever else they do.
Acting simultaneously as counselor, coach and umpire/ref (cheering on your team and remaining unbiased)
Dealing with complaints about everything
etc. etc.
Try putting 13 ten year olds to bed every night!!!
